The term “feminism,” in our society, is one that is often misinterpreted, understood only by way of pop cultural references that serve to mock and berate the movement and its ideologies. When many people hear “feminism,” they think of overzealous, hyper-aggressive women that despise all men. When many people hear “feminism,” they often imagine said women as…

Excerpts:

Growing Up Queer: A Brief Lesson on Hetero- and Homonormativity
If growing up a Black kid listening to "white" post-hardcore and screamo music in suburban northern Virginia didn’t make me feel odd enough, I too had to cope with the social consequences of my sexuality and effeminacy. Constantly bombarded with remarks on my mannerisms, the feminine inflections in my voice and the way I ran in gym class, I realized that something about me was contradictory to preconceived notions of what a Black male “should” be. The Peculiar Kind: "Remembering Homeless Youth During The Holidays"
We came across this article on GLAAD.org so we had to share it with you.
REMEMBERING HOMELESS YOUTH DURING THE HOLIDAYS
As families across the country gather to celebrate the holidays, it’s important to remember the many people, particularly LGBTQ-identified youth, who are without a permanent home or family simply because of who they are and love.
In fact, a census conducted by the Empire State Coalition and released by the New York City Council in 2008, found…

From the WTF department: Police in Swaziland ban women from wearing clothes that "encourage rape"
From the WTF department: Police in Swaziland ban women from wearing clothes that "encourage rape". More info below.
But really, beyond Swaziland, isn't time to stop blaming rape on the person who gets raped? Time to freaking get real. Whatever you wear or whatever you did is not an excuse for someone to rape you or for any other unethical behavior.
However, one reader stated on the…

"Bury The Ratchet" Already!
"Bury The Ratchet". That's the name of a campaign at Spelman College that challenges the images of showed in reality TV shows about women of color from Atlanta. The project is helmed by image activist Michaela Angela Davis. She recently told Jacque Reid on the Tom Joyner Morning Show that it's more a “pro-leadership” campaign than an “anti-reality show” one, aimed at getting the "spotlight off the ratchetness and on the successful women in Atlanta".
Actually this problem…

She's been skating since the age of 5. Beatrice exhibits a chilled-relaxed style making skating off roofs and backside heel flipping look effortless but at the same time entirely sick. Some of her favorite skaters include Vanessa Torres, Dylan Rieder and Collin Provost.
