Tattoo of the week: Atlanta's Barbie

This week's tattoo feature calls herself, Renegade Barbie. As scary as that sounds, we like her name, almost as much as we love her 60+ tattoos she has planted all over her body. Renegade...ahem...Ms. Barbie is not only a model, but she is one half owner of 2 Cool 2 Cry Tattoos and Piercings located in Atlanta, GA. This week we feature the model/entrepreneur/hot mom on Afropunk.com and don't forget to send us pictures of your tattoos to afropunkcommunity@gmail.com to be featured…

Fashion Photo Essay- ROBOTHUGS 2025

It was really cool to see some faces we're familiar with in this month's Vice fashion issue.  New York photographer, Aliya Naumoff, photographed a series called Robothugs 2025 using models Ibrahim Yaqut (who was a featured painter at the 2009 and 2010 Afro-punk Festival), model, Shaun Ross and the beautiful and tattooed, Omahyra, who we just can't get…

Hairstylist, Spikey Love, Blends Form and Function

Spikey Love--It has a ring to it doesn't it? When I first heard the name, I didn't know what to think but it stuck with me, which is rare. I booked an interview without hesitation wondering a number of things; who exactly is this Spikey person? What does she look like? Why Spikey Love? It was like a mystery waiting to be solved. Several weeks later I got the opportunity to find out. On a sunny afternoon post… Continue

Tattoo of the week: It just adds to your cool

We know her as the ferocious (Bjork inspired) vocalist for the newly formed Brooklyn band, Galaxy of Tar.  When she's out and about, people give her second and third looks.  "Are you that girl from America's…

Tattoo of the week: Taking Ink to the Schools

When Stevey aka Blackboitatted e-mailed us images of his tattoos to be featured on Afropunk.com, we were floored by the detailing in his ink work and knew that this guy was serious about his body work.  We later discovered that he has started his own company in Boston called Addicted 2 Ink, where he plans to expand the tattoo life style to different sectors such as after school programs and kid's events.  His brand is already located in Virginia, NYC, ATL, Chicago,…

Tattoo of the week: Another Beautiful Collage

If you've been following our tattoo of the week posts, you know that sometimes we like to run collages of beautiful minority women with tattoos that we find on the web with no information about them, just for viewing pleasure.  One of our favorite blogs, Fuck Yea Black Chicks With Tattoos, has been great for finding some of our features because when we post images of these beautiful women, if we get… Continue

Tattoo of the week: Lesson #1, Know thy artist

Our feature this week, 22-year-old, Melissa from Florida, currently has four tattoos with a full length ivy vines that cover her back in memorial of her step-grandmother. Most of our submissions have no regrets for any of the work that they've had on their skin, but Melissa regrets the tattoo artist that did one of her tattoos who had never inked dark skin. Word to the wise, ask your tattoo artist if they are comfortable tattooing your skin…

Tattoo of the Week: I'm Looking at You, Creep

Have you ever felt like someone was watching you, but there was no one in the room? We can't imagine how much more creepy it would be to have a detailed eye tatted on your arm that would pretty much glare at you whenever you moved your arm up and down. This week we are featuring Aviun Knives, a 20-year-old, artist and college student, who has an all seeing eye on his left forearm as one of his five tattoos. He says it has no literal meaning but got…

Tattoo of the Week: Ballers get tatted, too!

We always appreciate when guys submit their tattoo images for a feature of the week...for some reason we get an overwhelming amount of responses from women (not that we mind). This week's feature is Dev Devious, a 30-year-old self proclaimed "baller" from Jacksonville, Florida. In his submission, he even makes note that he has a 745 credit score (if you want his contact info, we might give it to you). From the looks of it, he…

Tattoo of the Week: Death Be Upon Us

Besides the really amazing calf tattoos representing the ladder of death, this week we are featuring 22-year-old St. Mary from Dallas, TX. St. Mary, who also goes by Sick Boy, is a painter, guitarist, and does non-profit work at a non-profit orphanage. She also has an ink of the word "dead" on her hand that she has practically scrapped off of her skin (read on for more on this procedure). Thanks for your story, Sick Boy, we love the ink. And… Continue

Tattoo of the week: We digg the E-mail

For tattoo of the week, we normally post why we featured that tat for the week, but this week we liked Ariel's e-mail that came with the photos, that we decided just to post the e-mail here. Read for yourself why this ink was chosen, aside from the sick skull and microphone ink.

"Hello. My name is Ariel. I'm 18 years young… Continue

Tattoo of the week: Spread love the Rainbow Way

We love the fact that this week's tattoo of the week feature is keen on the rainbow, how we love colors over here, if you couldn't tell by the site. This week our feature is Ms. 21-year-old, Isake Smith, a Brooklyn native who is currently studying abroad in Granada. She has four tattoos with plans to get more after her experience studying over seas. Our fav is her quote in cursive that says, "No expectations, no regrets," with a nautical star and… Continue

Tattoo of the week: A full complete sleeve

This week's tattoo feature is Boston's own, Kaishiro. As a graphic designer and music producer, Kaishiro got his first ink when he was 23. He now has eight tattoos and has a complete sleeve, which in itself is an accomplishment, he says, because most people leave their arms incomplete. Understood. Check out his work and don't forget to send your tattoo images to us at whitney@afropunk.com to be featured as our tattoo of the week.…

TATTOO OF THE WEEK: Fuck yea, black chicks with tattoos favs

I'm so tired of you cute shy fuckers. We know you have tattoos. We see them on your profile pictures, we talk about how awesome they are on our off time. Yet, we ask you guys to submit pictures of your tattoos to be featured on afropunk.com and they come in so infrequently that we're forced to harass people we see in the street to send us in their work. So, we'll keep asking each week for you guys to submit…

Tattoo of the week: A Comic Book Marvel

It's shiny. It's oily. Yummm, the smell of a fresh tattoo, all petroleum jellied out announcing it's newness and permanence. This week we had to feature the new tattoo from Mitchell Douglas, who recently got the comic book character, Luke Cage of Marvel on his upper arm with plans to develop it into a full sleeve. Mitchell said he got the Marvel character because his admiration of comics ability to stretch his…

Solange rocks Afro on cover of FashizBlack magazine

More fashion this month, with a nice find of songstress, Solange Knowles, on this month's cover of French magazine, FashizBlack. Photographer, Itaysha Jordan, captures Solange in some dope shots sporting an alined Afro and ethnic prints that she's been into lately. Nicely done. Solange has also been sported around New York for fashion week, hitting up…

Tattoo of the week: Hawaii's got pride

Originally from Honolulu, our feature for this tattoo of the week is 26-year-old, Amonica Phipps. Amonica currently lives in Brooklyn, NY and is a full time student getting her masters at Rutgers University and has been inked up 12 times. Our favorites are the Hawaii islands she has trailed on her stomach. So dope. For the cool background story and collective stomach tattoos, this week we are proud to…
