Some musicians know that breaking into the music industry as a black alternative artist can be tough so they don't even bother. For the month of March, here on Afrounk.com, we would like to highlight a few emerging brave new artists who don't mind going broke, have looked pass the rejection, and who have successfully managed to gain respect in the industry with their talents. Back in the 80s, the L.A. band Fishbone freaked people out with their sped up reggae fused with punk… Continue

It seems like the Bad Brains crew have been feeling pretty generous to the U.S. music scene, announcing several new performance dates on their social networking sites, including an announcement on their Facebook page today saying they are performing at the 2011 South By South West (SXSW) music festival on March 16 at 4PM at…

Before Bob Marley was Bob Marley he was just Bob. Before he blew your mind. Before I caught myself even naming a favorite Bob Marley song, I realized I didn't even know what Bob Marley looked like sans dreadlocks. He had a whole life and career before he ever thought about saying "get up, stand up" and every other song people these days might break out at a karaoke lounge. It's still Black History Month and I know all of you guys have forgotten! This is a final reminder, before…

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. There shouldn't be any surprise that they "kill it" "murdered a track" or "slay" anything. The name of the band says that they're going to be killing everything, and "kill", they most certainly do. I got a chance to see the boys this past Monday to a sold out crowd at Santos Party House in Manhattan, and it was the strangest, most bizarre spectacle of a show I've ever been to in my life. And I've seen…

Theophilus. I've heard a few of this guy's songs, I've seen him live twice, but I'm still not sure how I feel about the whole Theo thing. I'm leaning on the side of, no. Last night Theophilus played the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn after his network television debut on David Letterman. I decided to give him another chance, check him out and see how his show had tighten up since I saw him last year. 3rd song… Continue

After Marcus Price heard from a close friend about how children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are being affected by one of our world's deadliest wars, he knew that they needed to create some positive change. The story that really affected Marcus, as told by his friend Sean, was that during the war, children who are too small to carry a gun are sent to the front line guarded only with a whistle to protect themselves. In 2008, Marcus and Sean went on a mission to… Continue

Nduka Obaigbena saw an almost obvious void in the positive representation of African culture in print media. Over the last 20 years, he's been on a steady, successful, and lucrative quest to fix it. If you haven't had the pleasure of viewing Arise Magazine, it's a roughly 150 page quarterly publication jam packed with goodies of crisp, clean, well produced content on African culture, entertainment, news,… Continue

We've been jamming to Bad Rabbits for a while now, with their catchy uptempo funk disco beats that have a tendency to get stuck in your head with just one listen, and they've finally announced their 2011 tour dates for January and February. 2010 was a busy year for the Boston based band, with the release of their animated "Neverland" video back in September, to their nation wide college tour, to crashing the… Continue

Director and film maker, Spike Lee, and his wife Tonya Lewis Lee just released a children's book encouraging minority youth to change the world. Adding to their laundry list of inspirational endeavors, the Lee's said their book, "Giant Steps to Change the World," is not only meant to highlight people of all occupations who have done great things, but it is also meant to show children and adults that we all have gifts, we just have to cultivate them. "As an artist,… Continue

Whenever my dad brings a piece of apple pie into the movie theater, I jokingly tell him to stop being racist. One time my broke ass stumbled into the Hermes store and pale glaring stares escorted me out in a hurry. I said that store was racist! Whenever I suggest going to White Castle as a serious idea my…Added by Afro-Punk on January 12, 2011 at 3:00pm — 4 Comments
We love the internet. Even more than having a crazy obsession with how quickly the internet feeds us information, we LOVE bands who use the internet to self promote their music. Twitter, facebook, blogs, the works, we love bands that constantly keep us informed on their where abouts, who's pissing them off, new tracks, drunken photos, ya know, those sorts of things that are iconic for a good band. Case in point, The Memorials,… Continue

As a law student in the sweltering urban jungle that is Miami, I often come face-to-face with young Haitians who, at my age, have already lived the lives of 20 men. Most Haitian youth came to Miami by boat when they were 3 or 4 years old, and never became full blown citizens. When these kids break the law in ANY way - even if it's just a traffic violation - they are rounded up, taken by bus to Louisiana, and kept in a detention center until they are eventually deported to a… Continue

We knew that Minneapolis based band, Dearling Physique liked to incorporate theatrics with their performance, but their newly released video for “Discipline Your Hands,” takes music video theater to another level. According to the band, the clip itself depicts Mae, the primary subject of the band’s Deadeye Dealer album, in various ages, being confronted with memories.… Continue

I wanted the beef on his split with The Mars Volta, but he wouldn't dish out. At the age of 27, Thomas Pridgen, is far classier than most musicians I've encountered over the last year, even with his split with the Grammy Award winning band, The Mars Volta, back in 2009. For the last year, Thomas has been tediously working on his new music venture, The… Continue

Call it a definite post stocking stuffer...or fifth day of Kwanzaa gift, but what a treat it was to see the release of Canadian duo, The oOohh Baby Gimmie Mores, mixtape come out this week. We haven't heard from the guys, Denzil and Cola in a while, since releasing their first album, Interchorus, back in 2008, when they also booked the Afro-punk 2009 summer festival. The new… Continue
