Precious: A win for Mo'Nique

The film Precious, based on the novel Push by Saph.... (yadda yaddda you all know this part), is nothing if not controversial. Its performances and cinematography were strikingly rich, the subject matter was at times problematic for better or for worse (we leave to you to decide Afro-Punkers) but Mo'Nique's performance was indisputably moving (ditto on the for better or for worse here) and her Oscar win was not shocking in the slightest.

Kehinde Wiley ads African Cup of Nations

Contemporary Artist Kehinde Wiley was commissioned by Puma for portraits of African football players to launch African Cup of Nations 2010 campaign. The paintings have most notably been shown in renowned galleries such as Deitch Projects in New York in an exhibit entitled "Legends of Unity" in February 2010.

Sanford Biggers exhibit in Santa Barbara

Visual artist Sanford Biggers has a solo show coming up at CAF in Santa Barbara. It's called Moon Medicine, opening Saturday, March 6th. There will be a unique monograph catalog of the exhibition and limited edition photographic prints for sale. Multi-disciplinary in scope, the exhibition comprises new and old sculpture, video, installation, a newly commissioned public performance, and an exhibition catalog.
