You Can't Handle Black with W. Kamau Bell

We found a comedian who claims he can end racism in one hour. That's right. W. Kamau Bell (pronounced KA-MAOW, like KA-POW) says that his one man stand up show can end that nasty little "r" word that we've all got mighty comfortable with. So, we decided to invite this San Francisco comedian to the Afro-punk scene to smack us around a little, get the race conversation stirred up a bit, and to make us a little more uncomfortable about what racism really is.

You Can't Handle Black: A new comedy series about race
Hi, I am W. KAMAU BELL, ESQ, DDS, AT&T and I'm an addict.

It's cool and all because I'm addicted to CULT OF PERSONALITY and it makes me feel amazing.

I've been hooked for about VERNON REID years now and I often FISHBONE because of it.

There was one time I even BAD BRAINS'ed all over myself because I wanted it so bad.

Yea, so the right reverend JAMES MARSHALL HENDRIX was a little mad, but I didn't care.

It was worth the feeling of THE BAND OF GYPSYS in my loins.

One time, I even paid FOLLOW FOR NOW'ed for PUBLIC ENEMY FEATURING ANTHRAX up my nose, but it was necessary.

The weird part is, I URBAN DANCE SQUADly remember when I became hooked.

I think it all started for me when STREET SWEEPER SOCIAL CLUB's ONE DAY AS A LION and I found 24-7 SPYZ spilling HEAVY METAL SOUL BY THE POUND.

You couldn't tell me that only album from COREY GLOVER & VICE_ I had even seen.

Over the past JOURNEY HAS A FILIPINO SINGER NOW_ years I have probably spent SOUND BARRIER on KELVYNATOR, which is money I could have spent on MICHAEL HILL'S BLUES MOB.

So that I don't have symptoms of withdrawal, I became friends with DID YOU KNOW ALICE IN CHAINS NEW LEAD SINGER IS A BLACK DUDE?, who lets me know what's going on so I can get first grabs at it.

I don't need help because my addiction is something I am dealing with all by myself.

But, hey. If you see or hear about some secret nice COMES WITH THE FALL, let me know.

@W.KAMAU: Thanx for the heads-up on that book (I just wandered over to Amazon and placed an order) -- it looks SUPER rad!! Bill Hicks and Lewis Black are at the top of my faves -- and I LOVE Pryor and Cosby, as well. Carlin, Cosby, The Smothers Brothers, Jon Stewart, Janeane Garofalo, Margaret Cho and Vidur Kapur are all a very close second. Can't wait to check out the book. Hope you're having big fun on the tour. June 13th @ The Punch Line...got it! :o)

@BOWERYBETTY I'm sooooooooo happy that you appreciated the Dave Mason clip. :-) I hope @The MelodiousFly J. Mitchell did as well.

Bill Hicks is my FAVORITE comedian of all-time. So to be compared to him is humbling. And of course George Carlin is the gold standard of comedy, along with Richard Pryor, and Bill Cosby. (I'm a HUUUUUGE fan of comedy history. If you like your comedy like that too, then you should check out the new book, "The Satiristas." It is filled with interviews and pictures of stand-up comics who specialize in satire. http://www.satiristas.com/

Stay in touch. And I had BETTER see you next time I'm in the Bay Area. I'll be at The San Francisco Punch Line June 13. Thanks! And take care!

@W.KAMAU -- Dave-friggin'-Mason. Wow...that takes me right back to junior high in 1977. My mom loved that song. You're so welcome for the comment, it's definitely heartfelt. I don't know how you feel about the late Bill Hicks and George Carlin, but you share a very similar gift. The power to make people laugh until beer comes out of their nose (sorry...too graphic, I know -- but I've seen it happen!!!)...and also the guts to encourage people to THINK. Stay true to your vision -- your voice is so needed in these insane tea baggin' times we're living in. I live in San Francisco and I'm going to try and make your next show whenever you're back in town. I wish you nothing but the best, brother.

Well, @ The MelodiousFly J. Mitchell, I hope we can settle on the fact that "genuineness," much like beauty and humor, is in the eye of the beholder.

I have many black women in my life. I'm just not married to one.

But mostly I think I just want to say this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8_FOQ7-P30

Enjoy!

LOL, Thank You, for being open. You are funny too me, just not genuine. Now go start thinking "this is why I don't fuck with black women" LOL. tokenisim. at it' best.

And I meant pulpit.

@ The MelodiousFly J. Mitchell, you don't have to talk about me like I'm not here. :-)

1) Of course you are welcome to your opinion. Let me make that abundantly clear. I've been asking for MANY, MANY critical eyes fro years. And it's SUUUUUUURE to continue. But just in case you haven't seen enough of my work to have this opinion here are some clips: http://www.wkamaubell.com/video

2) My wife's name actually is not Becky. But you are free to keep guessing.

3) One could be plenty watered down version of Paul Mooney and still be a strong cup of coffee. Also, I've opened for Mr. Mooney twice and he likes me. Does that make a difference? And I'm not rejecting the Wanna Be Paul Mooney thing. What black comedian worth a quarter WOULDN'T wanna have the career Mr. Mooney has? But really I'm trying to be me.

4) Is a "Pull Pit" different than a "pulpit?"

5) I don't think I need your Hood Pass... for now, but I'll certainly keep your offer on file. Thank you!

6) Actually since I tell people to bring a friend of a different race, in the Bay Area, where I do most of my shows, I have an extremely mixed audience. Although maybe it's not because of me. Maybe it's because people just love a deal. Hmmm?

7) What up, my ni... Just kidding.

@ BoweryBetty Thank you very much for that. Makes me feel warm inside.

I'm very chill, just posting my Humble Opinion which is only mine. He's a watered down Wanna Be Paul Moony. He put himself in the Black Pull Pit so he's asking for my very critical eye. If he said "what up nigga" to me I'd be offended. I'm willing to loan him my Hood Pass, if he ask nicely. LOL,
