I have had the wonderful opportunity to interview Shaun McDaniel, a Black skinhead. Now, usually when people hear the term skinhead, the idea of an uber-racist Aryan Nazi-lover springs to mind and to hear of a Black skinhead appears very oxymoronic. Getting to hear McDaniel to tell his story definitely tell otherwise.

Comment by Frank Castle on December 19, 2012 at 1:24pm @Monique - Have you gone through the videos on my profile yet? I recently fell in love with a POLISH Ska band who sing in (slightly flawed, but very good) English, Skapoint, my favourite track of theirs is "Call Me", maybe that will give you a taste for it. ;-) I do, by the way, love Hardcore, too. Maybe not all of it, but some. But Ska and Reggae aren't for every Skin, apart from those sticking to Rude Boy or Boot Boy style, I personally am blending Rude Boy style with Oi! Skin style, a number of Oi! Skins actually listen to Oi! and Punkrock only, the majority like the traditional genres as well, though, including Soul. But yeah, I don't know how many British bands you've come across, but you might spot a few you haven't heard of before if you go through the videos on my profile. :-)
Comment by Monique Little on December 18, 2012 at 5:56pm @Frank- I see what you mean about listening to RAC and being influenced by it. It was wise that you recognized what it was doing to you and pulled away from it. Yea, I must admit I think I will always have a soft spot for skinhead boys : ) One thing I could never get into was Ska, I like reggae (Generally) but I could not really get into Ska. Some skins would make fun of me because of that. I guess it was like a requirement to like Ska, well... it is apart of the culture, and I was the only one who was not into it lol. I guess, I just having found a Ska band or group that I really enjoyed. I love NY hardcore (Hardcore, period) and Oi. In america, all skins I know like hardcore. It is strange to hear that people have that impression about skinheads in England because I have always thought that, considering the skinhead culture hailed from there, it would be much different. The power of media influence is a bitch! I met some British skins when I was younger, cool folks. When you get the chance, put me on to some music coming out from your neck of the woods. It's been awhile since I have been in the scene, and I live down south now and seeing a skinhead nowadays is like spotting the solar eclipse lol.
Comment by Frank Castle on December 18, 2012 at 10:41am @Monique Haha, yep, we sure look after our ladies! :-D When I was younger, I did listen to some RAC, at that time it didn't seem to matter to me, just like I thought racist jokes were okay because they're 'just jokes', and that I could be friends with Nazis because politics don't matter, etc. I realised quickly that sooner or later there will be one of those friends telling you "if you're not with us, you're against us", that was when I decided that I'm against them and that I just can't be friends with any extremists, as at some point they will expect you to become like them. It wasn't before then that I noticed how they had influenced me, and partially poisoned my mind, already. A few friends had stropped talking to me, and later, after we made up, they said it was because I had started to 'sound like them'. And as for RAC, ignoring the content lyrics is just not for me anymore, part of the reason friends started to notice changes they didn't like were down to me singing along to RAC songs and thinking nothing of it. I should have known better. Now I do. And even here in the UK, the birthplace of the Skinhead movement, you'd be lucky if you get to spot a black Skin these days, even though I know there are still some around. These days you get rather used to boarding a bus and getting hateful looks from black passengers, even when you're sporting a Jamaican flag and "Skinhead Reggae" on your jacket.
Comment by Monique Little on December 17, 2012 at 6:05pm Um... is it weird to admit the fact that i have listen to some racist skinhead music before, and it was kind of good lol. Maybe i'm just a fucked up individual. @FrankCastle- Yea, i heard about how the racist skinhead shit came about in the UK, and unfortunately that is what most people think out side of the culture. I even thought that way at one time. Surly, you can imagine how interesting it was telling pole that i was a shin head lol. I eventually had to grow the balls to do it. Back on topic- For the most part, i had positive experiences in the community with the exception of getting into a few fights and brawls, and having to explain 'how can i be black and a skinhead' lol. I also enjoyed being one of a few black skins, to be honest. People where always very inquisitive, about it, ect. I even had people say that they wished to see more black skinheads, and was exited to see one. Many skinheads i knew were very eager to show me what it really meant to be a skin and very welcoming. Not to mention, skinhead dudes are very protective of women which is very hot!!! lol.
Comment by Frank Castle on December 17, 2012 at 1:10pm I'll have to agree with YANK, the "Romper Stomper" clip seems a little out of place here, as good as the movie may be seen as a movie and nothing more. In this context it rather seems to confirm what a lot of people without any real knowledge think already, and I thought the point of this article was to clear those distorted perceptions up. Let's keep in mind that the "Skin=Nazi" crap started when, after a few incidents involving bald heads, the mainstream media started using the term 'Skinhead' whenever they were referring to militant racists, regardless of whether or not they actually called themselves 'Skinheads', let alone the stupidity of awarding oneself that title whilst hating those who created the whole thing in the first place. Oi!

Comment by Yank on March 11, 2012 at 9:10pm Nice to see other skins here on AP.
To everyone else, FYI not everyone who isn't on the right is SHARP. Alot of us who can afford to keep politics totally out of it. Depends on where you live and who shares the streets with you.
Hope this guy is doing well. Scene is on a downshift in popularity, but that means less bullshit, less fools, and better times as far as I'm concerned.
But what's with putting a clip from romper stomper and a bunch of swazis on this? Lame.
