I went to the music store on Broad St. at Adams here in Richmond, Va.
I bought 2 packs, each, of d'Addario and Ernie Ball Super Slinkies. I also bought a capo and a slide, but they didn't have Fender heavy tear-drop picks.
I looked at the wireless amp system too. $89.99. I would by it, but don't really need it nor can I spend the money.
I do need a new cord, 'cause mine is starting to buzz, but that will have to wait a bit.

Comment by AfroCuban on May 19, 2011 at 6:59pm I have the practice, small Peavey that came with the guitar. The guitar is Guitar Works made guitar. They make them in the shop and it comes as part of a package. I got the package that came with the amp, analog tuner, book+cd, gig bag and guitar strap. I bought some basic Yamaha headphones and picks - I always need picks.
I haven't played in years, so I wanted to get a decent cheap guitar (but it's not really a cheap guitar) and setup to give it a go again. I didn't want to spend a grip in case I stopped playing again. Last time I played, I was "garage band" level: could work on tunes to play at fellow bike messengers' and civilians' parties. Did that a few times in a pick up group, playing the 'real' band's instruments (our friends, who said, 'take over, we're taking a break'). Was very, very cool. You know. So, we thought, let's be a band! Heh , heh.
Then hard times hit for all of us, and I didn't keep my guitar.
The headphones look good. Now, I think I need an I/O box to plug into to amp the headphones. I was hoping for self-powered headphones.
I saw the Stomp Boxes too. Fancy, The Edge, kinda fancy. I had a fuzz and distortion pedals. I turn up the gain on amp. if I feel the need for something different for now.
I'll have to keep that Valve King in mind, but, apartment, BUT sometimes the neighbors are noisy. I say revenge - but last time they were, I plugged in, turned on, blasted them with my amp with the window open. Seems to have worked.
Comment by Jay Money on May 19, 2011 at 6:38pm I have a Peavey Valveking....great sounding 100 watt tube amp for a decent price....but it is strictly for gigs due to the sheer volume. Not for apartments!
The GT-6 hooked into a smaller amp approximates the tube sound enough for playing at home. I am all for tube amps for live gigs or if you have a house. The Boss GT-6 does have a special place in my collection because it took me most of the summer of 2002 working for peanuts to get one. The GT-6 is my "quiet practice" and recording tool. Live, it is stompbox pedals and the VK.
What kind of guitar(s) do you have? And speaking of the GT-6, you could probably get that or the GT-8 for cheap because they are the "old" ones. The Sony MDR-7506 headphones are a great match to plug into the headphone jack of my GT-6. This way I can practice and not disturb the neighbors.

Comment by AfroCuban on May 19, 2011 at 6:11pm Thanks, I'll keep that Boss GT-6 in mind. I'm far from doing any serious recording yet. I think I saw it on the Boss site (yes, a while ago I was drooling over music toys. I even lusted after a $100 digital tuner: the kind that cuts off sound to the head/amp while you are tuning and returns sound when you push off).
I remember liking the various amp emulations. An old friend that I took guitar lessons from had bought a 60s/70s tube amp that had good tone and was loud as heck for it being the size of a medium-sized suitcase. Distortion was the best on it too.
I think a stage tuner, wireless setup, and that BOSS GT-6 will be what I get when I've "earned it". I wanted to find some headphones I could jack into my guitar with that would take care of amplification so I could just have my axe and the headphones for sound while practicing. Haven't found one, but I swear I saw someone that had one once.
Comment by Jay Money on May 19, 2011 at 5:43pm Not sure what kind of guitar effects you use, but if you record via computer, I'd recommend a multieffects processor. This way you don't have to mic the amp when recording. I have a Boss GT-6 (the current model is the GT-10). It emulates famous amps and has all the flange, delay, chorus you could ever need. They are a bit pricey, but worth it if you do a lot of recording. Plus it has a built in tuner.
But yes, it is nice to dream of which music equipment I'd purchase if there was more surplus cash.
Comment by AfroCuban on May 19, 2011 at 12:22pm I went to Metro Sound and Music.
Comment by AfroCuban on May 19, 2011 at 11:54am Yeah, it does. I think impulse shopping is the worst in music stores and book shops when you actually have money in your wallet. I think wish fulfillment and fantasy play a big part in music store. I could use a stage tuner on stage, but def. don't really need one now. Same for the wireless setup, it's cool and all but I'm not going to be more than 5 feet from my amp at home, so I don't really need that either.
If I had real money, crap, I'd be buying vintage Fenders and Gibsons, and cases, straps, and who knows what else.
Comment by Jay Money on May 19, 2011 at 12:26am I also use D'Addarios......10-46 on the Les Paul, and 9-42 on the ES-355 and Strat. Although I am considering switching to 10-46 for all my guitars.
But yeah, the accessories that go with the guitar such as strings, picks and strings can get expensive real fast.
