Lupe Fiasco & Erykah Badu's Heavy Performance at the Hip Hop Awards '11

You all know we're not exactly big fans of BET around here, to say the least. However, we thought you might enjoy Lupe Fiasco and Erykah Badu's performance from last night's Hip Hop Awards. Mr. Fiasco's "Occupy" T-shirt drew a lot of attention (reference to Occupy Wall Street movement?), but we're also seeing what seems to be the Palestinian flag on stage, and Erykah Badu is wearing a burqa-like veil. So that was quite a controversial performance. Whatchu think? - Lou C-D

I couldn't agree more with Polarmbez.  It's about time MC's got down with the program.  The best way to send a message like this is through Rock n' Roll.  Hopefully from an event like this we can be rerecognized as the true Rockstars.  Afro-Punk forever.

Chilling... The message about Obama was not lost... The flag, I believe, was in reference to Obama being so involved in Palestinian politics but not focusing on what really matters.

The guitar player look like... NOTHING. What is the problem of major company bands with black guitar players?!

I like the energy. and the visual and the intent but lupe's lyrics had me disappointed. He was kind of all over the place. He's capable of a more cohesive song (see conflict diamonds). and is me or did it sound like he had a cold?

lawd lawd the people is preachin'!  this was a decent performance that threw BET/MTV/VIACOM for a loop, lol.  but did u guys check the fact the badu was wear a hasidic jewish hat with her niquaab and burqa and she was sounding like Delores O'Riordan of the cranberries (rihanna tries this too)?

"I'm a part of the problem, my problem is I'm peaceful" I love that line. I'd have to be trying really hard to find fault in this performance. It was dope, Plain and simple. Lupe performed with the energy and electricity that you don't normally get out of hip-hop artist these days. A lot of these guys have "swagger" but having passion behind what your're saying is lost on a lot of these dudes. And he's talking about something. No matter how topical or or heavy-handed his political opininons may be. He's bringin that dialogue to a pop music landscape. I'm glad he's on the radio, in Best Buy, In Target, and performing stuff like this on BET. He's more useful there then playing the backpack chitlin circuit. We need him in the mainstream to balance it out. Plus Ms.Badu on the assist. Rocking a burka and singing the chorus to what is essentially a rock song on BET is just as provacative as getting butt naked an walking down a crowded Dallas street in broad daylight just to make a point. It's nice to see her support this brotha on his movement. whatever it is. The flag was a nice touch. It's subversive. He's doing the most unpopular shit and it's actually helping to make him even more popular. Brilliant
