... the other Black experience
Over the past few years the DIY scene in Nairobi has exploded into one of the most vibrant on the continent. While there remains no “Nairobi sound.” the diversity of the bands in the scene ranges from indie pop to the most brutal of metal. Mortal Soul is definitely the most brutal metal Kenya has to offer right now.
The quartet of Leon, Pete, Joey, and Celeste plays a chunky metalcore reminiscent of Bullet for My Valentine. Pete's guitar work is intricate and technical, especially on the serpentine “Solace.” While the epic “My Soul” highlights singer Leon's dynamic full-throated vocals; switching from a croon to a scream with the fury of a dozen Geoff Ricklys. Some tuning issues aside, the band is tight as hell.
