26-year-old michael tubbs becomes first black mayor of stockton, california

Stanford grad Michael Tubbs just did what many thought was impossible. The 26-year old is the newly elected mayor of Stockton, California, beating incumbent Anthony Silva by a considerable margin after being embattled by considerably damning scandal involving minors. The young politician is not only the first Black mayor, but also the youngest mayor of the city to date. For the past three years, he’s served on the City Council, working to bring health clinics to his district and improve the relationship between the community and the police. This is an important example of the importance of the best and brightest of our communities returning to make tangible change. Local elections are the most impactful on our everyday lives, so to see a Black mayor in a city whose Black residents need attention, is extremely gratifying.
