July 19, 2016

The 2016 Brooklyn AFROPUNK Festival happening August 27th and 28th at Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park, whose lineup includes Ice Cube, TV On The Radio, Tyler The Creator, Flying Lotus, Janelle Monae, The Internet, and many more have announced a new wave of artists to the lineup today that include Laura Mvula, Yaadcore, Ho99o9, BLXPLTN, Sir The Baptist and Brainfeeder additions DJ PBDY, Mono/poly, Ras G among others. The 2-day event that drew north of 60,000 festivalgoers last year, will once again feature Activism Row, the Bites&Beats pop up restaurant and food truck rally and the SpinThrift Market.

Bites&Beats is a food event within the event, featuring  25+ food trucks and local pop-up restaurants. AFROPUNK curates an experience for everyone from vegans to paleos featuring tastes from around the world that include: Kingston Eatery, A Taste of Africa, Cafe Habana, Jeepney, Mamu Thai, Monk Meats, Asia Dog, Hill Country BBQ, Mrs. Dorseys Kitchen, Brooklyn Soda Works, Nuchas, Souvlaki GR, Alchemy Creamery, Palenque Homemade Colombian Food, and many more.

One of the best things about the AFROPUNK festival is its community-driven initiatives. Activism Row is an interactive site-specific educational installation featuring grassroots non-profits that attempt to solve urgent community problems.  Activism Row’s goal is to inform youth about civic participation opportunities. This year the area is presented in partnership with AIDS Healthcare Foundation and participating organizations include Black Lives Matter, Amnesty International USA, Headcount, Families United for Racial and Economic Equality (FUREE), Care More, LiveOnNY and many more.

The SpinThrift Market showcases and celebrates the best of the AFROPUNK maker community. With 90+ DIY-minded craft vendors who sell an array of one-of-a-kind and bespoke, jewelry, natural beauty products, apparel, housewares, books, prints, and more.

AFROPUNK has long been known as an advocate of cultural change. The earned ticket program, called AFROPUNK Army, encompasses that by giving fans the opportunity to volunteer for admittance. AFROPUNK works closely with partners to provide volunteer activities and projects for fans to complete in exchange for a ticket to the festival (a minimum of 8 hours of volunteer work will earn ONE General Admission Weekend Pass). The volunteer program creates awareness for organizations in need, provides access to an engaged pool of valuable resources and helps deliver a sustainable impact to communities. Over 20,000 volunteers have participated in projects that include packing supplies for NYC homeless (prep, serving), donation drives and advocacy via social media promotion.

For the first time this year in an innovative partnership, AFROPUNK and NYC Service, a division of the Office of Mayor Bill de Blasio, brought 15 different volunteer engagement opportunities that will engage volunteers through the Sports & Arts in Schools Foundation (SASF)! SASF is one of the largest providers of free school-based after-school and summer programs in NYC and the metropolitan region, and serves more than 50,000 students in over 300 public schools. These opportunities will engage volunteers in encouraging public school children to play more, have fun, adopt healthy lifestyle habits, as well as expose them to the college and career options that abound! The opportunities began in July and culminate on August 19th.
