AFROPUNK

... the other Black experience

2 days, 26 bands, 5 DJs, 15 Food trucks, 80 local vendors, 8 custom motorcycles, 100+ skaters and 40 THOUSAND AFROPUNKS made up AFROPUNK FEST 2012. There was so much energy and it was all ((POS VIBES)). We’ll be talking about all the sweet stuff that went down at this festival until next year, but here are just TEN of our favorite overall moments.

By: Alexandria Gamlin

1. NEW BANDS MAKING IT BIG

Shoutout to our BATTLE OF THE BANDS winners the OXYMORRONS. They were incredible. They gave it shot, WON and rocked the house. Well deserved for such an awesome group of guys.

2. Y’ALL WERE INTO IT!

Nearly 20,000 people showed EACH DAY! All for love, community and jams. No pretension or “hipsterness” that you can feel at other festivals. Your love and participation is what AFROPUNK is all about.

3. STYLE

From funky 'DO's to sharp threads and tattoos, this years fest was quality fashion/people watching!

4. BIKES

We were thrilled to host the BROOKLYN RHAPSODY bike show. It brought a "kickassness" to the festival you definitely won’t find at Coachella!

5. "AT THE COOL SHIT DOING COOL SHIT"

This Spank Rock (Who also KILLED the Red Stage) track could have been the theme for the whole festival. Shoutout to Afropunk fave, Johnny Nelson who held it down with Spank Rock and made the cool shit, even cooler.

6. CELEBRITY GUESTS

HEY, ITS JIMMY MCMILLIAN, THAT DUDE WHO THINKS THE RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH! Adrian Grenier, Solange Knowles, W Kamau Bell, Mos Def and Pharell were in the house too, so that's cool.

7. ERYKAH DROPS IT LOW ON THE MIC STAND WITH AN AWESOME BELT CHAIN ON

#BLESSMSBADU

8. PUTTING IT IN THE AIR

On BMX bikes, geeze you guys. IT WAS AMAZING BY THE WAY

9. SIBLING BANDS

The Skins, Radkey and OXYMORRONS keep it in the family. A family that RAWKS together, plays AFROPUNK FEST together, which will probably help them stay together

10. SKATERS

SKATERS DOING THANGS! ALWAYS A FAVORITE THING!

as i mentioned in my day 1 and day 2 write up for the fest:

the crowd going nuts and singing along to "smells like teen spirit" by nirvana (day 2)

watching grown ass men singing along to erykah badu's "didn't cha know" while she performed. priceless! (day 1)

and i gotta add janelle monae's performance as a whole but her rendition of the jackson 5's "i want you back" had everyone losing their minds, myself included. (day 2)
