afropunk premiere: ‘fumes’ – the new single from ny based singer songwriter stella

November 18, 2015

Today we’re premiering the new single from NY singer songwriter Stella, entitled ‘Fumes’ – a musician who cites two of her biggest influences as Missy Elliott and Lauryn Hill: “That whole era of music really shaped me […] There was a strong sense of melody, a soulful quality that I am just drawn to, so when I started making music that’s just what started coming out of me.” Talking to us about her new release, Stella (the daughter of rock legend Carlos Santana) says: “Frankie P had reached out after the “Friends” video came out and this was the first beat I heard. As soon as I heard it I was like, YES THIS! He’d used a live sax and had it distorted a bit so it gives this drippy jazzy fucked up feel and I’d had “picking up the pieces from the promises you broke / the words you said were only smoke / and I inhaled until I choked” written down in my notes for a couple weeks. The mood matched the track perfectly to me so I started working off that first line as soon as we got to the studio. We finished it that day. It was a good day.” Listen below.
