afropunk premiere: lyon-based togolese afrobeat band vaudou game shines light on climate change with funked-out single ‘revolution’
New music from VAUDOU GAME, a funk-n-soul band from Togo, now based in Lyon. A unique fusion of afrobeats and 70s funk, Vaudou Game’s newest single ‘Revolution’ is an unexpected, energetic groove that pushes well past genre boundaries. Named after and inspired by the West African voodoo (or vodun) culture he grew up in, frontman Peter Solo employs ritualistic themes, particularly as they pertain to the environment.
“’Revolution’ is not about a human revolution but about the way Nature has reacted over the last years and will continue to react. We see an acceleration of climate disasters, earthquakes, tsunamis, tempests. Nature revolts because of the way She is mistreated by human societies. Exploitations of natural resources, pollutions…From a Vaudou perspective, Nature and its elements have eyes, ears, a soul and she/they express dissatisfaction by radical events when not taken care of and when advice is not listened to,“ the band tells AFROPUNK.
