afropunk premiere: m1 of deadprez radiates uplifting energy and resilience in new visual for “between me and the world” feat. bonnot
M1 of Deadprez and Bonnot take on current events in video for their wicked clever “Between Me and the World”. The single, which radiates with uplifting energy, perseverance and even optimism, makes commentary on the current and constant social and political struggles faced by marginalized POC and the working poor. “I was inspired by the book by Ta-Nehisi Coates by a similar name. This song is social propaganda if there ever was one. From Carter G. Woodson to Black Lives Matter, the commentary is relevant to right now. This is rapid-fire reality rap at it’s best!” M1 tells AFROPUNK.
But “Between Me and the World” is anything but a downtrodden, ‘woe is me’ kinda anthem. It’s is not even a song about survival, so much as it is about thriving. “I can still remember the energy in the studio, the day we recorded M1’s rap and my bass guitar,” says Bonnot. “I love this song. I love the lyrics, pure inspiration and dedication for our beloved! Rhymes and flow on a hip hop-funk vibe… classic and evergreen!” Coal cannot become diamonds without pressure and the spirit of black Americans similarly cannot be crushed under hard times—we only become stronger, more beautiful.
