afropunk premiere: the seshen finds beauty in pain on the captivating “distant heart” #soundcheck
It’s always cause for celebration when there’s new music from The Seshen, the Oakland-based future-soul septet. Their latest single, “Distant Heart,” trades out their trademark massively complex polyrhythmic instrumental section for an equally massively complex synth suite. Singer Lalin St. Juste, as always, delivers her winding melodies somehow both effortlessly and passionately. The St. Juste explains:
Distant Heart comes from coping with my close friend’s suicide. She was an artist who had so much life inside of her; talented, ridiculously funny, and she had a huge heart. So I celebrate her through my art, I mourn her death through my art. This song is my coming to peace with her decision and it symbolizes the fact that she passed her light to those who knew her to carry it forward, to hold it close…to create and live and dream. So there is energy and resiliency in this song despite the heartbreak.
