afropunk premiere: wishes and thieves’ latest single ‘go’ #soundcheck

We’ve been digging Wishes and Thieves since hearing their Forest Fire EP in 2012. Their unique mix of driving beats and ethereal melodies makes the quartet’s music absolutely irresistible. And because resistance is futile, we’re psyched to bring you the premiere of their latest single “Go.”

The track builds from a simple angular dance beat and singer Jolanda Porter chanting “Didn’t think I’d ever let you down,” before the band kicks in full. The vocal is hypnotic but not repetitive, Porter drawing you in with the back-and-forth of dependency and escape that comes with the end of a long relationship. The band courts this contradiction with sharp edged drums and staccato guitars. The dreamier elements of Wishes and Thieves’ sound are traded in for serrated knives.
