angela davis: “free assata shakur”

While speaking with Melissa Harris-Perry at the Women’s March in DC this weekend, activist/writer/educator Angela Davis discussed global oppression, progress, “historical mindedness”, and the contradictions of supporting a black President who, at times, did little for black and brown liberation. Davis took this time to champion the freedom of political prisoners such as Leonard Peltier, Mumia Abu-Jamal, and of course Assata Shaku, concluding “I think what feminism has helped me do is to live the contradiction between support for someone like Obama and deep, deep criticism.” Watch the full conversation with Davis and Harris-Perry, below.
