AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

Winter tends to affect my creativity. On some days the snow covers everything making things a lot less interesting or snowfall decreases visibility or cold temperatures can slow down a camera's mechanisms. I have taken some of my best cameras out in bad weather but I usually go for the beat up cameras that still work or my cheap plastic cameras. This go round,I used a better camera, which was a recent buy and was testing in bad weather for some reason,an all weather point & shoot, and a couple cheap plastic cameras I recently bought.

A recent addition in a Sears KS-2 aka Ricoh XR-7.

I bought four different Ricoh cameras (technically two Sears and two Ricohs but all were manufactured by Ricoh). My plan was to test them and sell them but the KS-2 is too nice to give up. The other three I am giving up for the cash. I also bought two cheap plastic cameras because their names sounded cool to me. A Yumeka DX-7 and a Yunon DX-3. I have seen similar cameras with different names so it is not too far fetched to think that one or two companies in Taiwan or China were churning out plastic cameras and putting whatever name their customer wanted.

I used the Yumeka first and then again with KS-2 and an Olympus on days with bad weather. The Yumeka and Olympus I didn't worry much about but the KS-2 go covered in snow while I was shooting but it never hesitated or stopped working.

My all weather camera is something I don't use much because it frustrates me with it's slow performance but it great for use in bad weather.

Now today I went out with the Yunon DX-3. I went to the south side of town, which I don't do often. It's so seldom that I do that I went to a park along the lake that I have never been to despite being born and raised in Milwaukee. Anyway,it was cool to see something different not to mention it was sunny and a lot of sun is what the Yunon DX-3 needs for great photos. One thing I noticed about the results is that the images have a very, very vintage look to them. I think it's a combo of the film and optical limitations of the camera. Seeing these images re-enforces my resistance to buying overpriced Diana and Holga cameras.

I am not sure what I am going to do next in my hobby. I have been doing more testing and selling cameras than shooting for my own creativity. I did buy a wide angle lens for the Canon 630 so I may shoot some more with it if there is decent weather. I also bought Russian camera but the two times I shot with it,I 1) forgot to keep count as a I was shooting so that I ripped the film from the spool at the end and 2) cold weather slowed the shutter down. I am quite sure I will just shoot and hopefully come up with something blog worthy.
