berlin-based artist puts the racist comments he receives on t-shirts

November 17, 2016

Making art from the struggle is a story as old as time. For Isaiah Lopaz, a Black expat living in Berlin, he decided to make art from the racist, offensive comments and wear them for all to see. After being mistaken as a drug dealer and hearing things like “Where do you really come from?” or “You have no culture because you come from slaves,” Lopaz decided to put the outlandish comments and questions on his shirts and wear them as a sort of performance art. This is an extremely creative response to a harsh reality, to read more of Lopaz thoughts on his artwork, you can find more insight in his interview with NYTimes.
