bhm: faces from the new civil rights movement – ciara taylor of dream defenders

February 2, 2015

Ciara Taylor is one of the founders and political director of the Dream Defenders – an activist heavily involved in student movements. Dream Defenders is a human rights organisation which was started in April 2012 by a group of African-American Florida college students and alumni following the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin. They not only fight against systemic racism and the oppression of Black and brown people, but as Taylor has stated, the group are also focused on issues around gender identity and religious freedom. Taylor previously worked with the Southern Poverty Law Center and the League of Women Voters of Florida – and has been featured on MSNBC’s Politics Nation with Al Sharpton discussing the fight to overturn the Stand Your Ground law in Florida.
