Black Music History Month: Top 10 Black Guitarists?

Not sure if you're aware of this, but US President Barack Obama proclaimed June 2011 'Black Music History Month', and even mentioned rock in the official proclamation: "The artistic depth of soul, rock and roll, and hip-hop not only bring together people across our Nation, but also energize and shape the creativity of artists around the world", it reads. In honor of this, popular/mainstream Black news website thegrio.com published a list of their 'Top 10 Black Guitarists': Lenny Kravitz, Tom Morrello (Rage Against The Machine), Dr. Know (Bad Brains), Buddy Guy, Eddie Hazel (Funkadelic), B.B. King, Slash (Guns N' Roses), Chuck Berry, Prince and number 1: Jimi Hendrix. Sooo... What do you all think? Who's on YOUR list? Let us know in the comments.

I have a problem with this rather subjective opinion poll . It's not the pole per say but the range of diversity of styles which  makes it almost impossible for me to rate a list of 10 guitarists as the " best". Therefore I'd like to submit several lists of my top 10 guitarists based on style as well as innovation, and technical ability, please bare with me , this is what happens when you love music so much as I do !, LOL !

ROCK

1. Hendrix ( the archetype of modern rock guitarist )

2. Tony MacAlpine ( neo classical/ fusion/ conservatory trained)

3. Tosin Abassi

4. Greg Howe

5.Arthur Rhames ( multi instrumentalist, played guitar like J. Mcglaughlin/ Hendrix, sax like Coltrane and keys.

6. Rocky George

7. Slash

8. Chris MacAlpine (plays a Holdsworth, J.Beck and Hendrix style ) yes he's Tonys brother !

9.Vernon R.( he's here because L.C's considered a rock band, but Vernon is more of a jazz player IMHO )

10. Doc Coyle ( God Forbid )

JAZZ:

1Charlie Christian

2. Wes Montgomery

3. Freddy Green

4. Billy Bauer

5. Kenny Burrell

6. John Collins

7. Sony Sharrock

8. G Benson ( when he played real jazz ! )

9. Michael Gregory Jackson

10. Bern Nix

INNOVATERS ( from a historical perspective )

1. Robert Johnson

2. Charlie Christian

3. Elmore James ( first recorded guitar solo using distortion, influenced Hendrix, Zappa and most electric players)

4. T Bone Walker ( created a hybrid style of big band jazz and blue, influenced Hendrix, B.B , Albert K.)

5. Chuck Berry ( the father )

6.Hendrix ( The modern archetype for rock )

7.Wes Montgomery

8 Tony MacAlpine ( Yngwie was the first to popularize the neo classical style, Tony took it in another direction)

9. Curtis Mayfield ( not my cup of tea but he was a innovator in rb on guitar )

10 Tosin Abasi ( the modern innovator)

This is just my humble opinion and I've probably omitted a few names, but it's something to think about eh ?. What do you think AP ?

Oh no please, come on, not B.B. King in that Top 10 Black guitarists - or maybe you did mean Albert King, right ??? And yes, how about Vernon Reid ? And Rocky George (Suicidal Tendencies, Fishbone), another under-estimated terrific guitar player ?

I'm assuming Bass Guitars count as well.  Several good ones have been mentioned.
