breaking: loretta lynch confirmed as first black female attorney general of the united states

April 23, 2015

Meanwhile, in important news, Loretta Lynch is (finally) confirmed by the Senate as the next Attorney General of the United States. As the successor to the bold, outspoken Eric Holder, Lynch has big shoes to fill, and steps into the role at a time when relations between police and communities are at an all-time low. Over the next 2 years, she will be faced with upholding Obama’s landmark immigration reform, justifying the legality of healthcare reform, as well as pushing for more police accountability.

Her confirmation was held up by the Senate for an unprecedented 5 months after Obama first nominated her for the post in November 2014. The vote was first delayed during the lame duck session following the elections, then held hostage as a bargaining chip to force Senate Democrats to accept anti-abortion language in a human trafficking bill. 10 Senate Republicans joined the 44 Democrats to confirm Loretta Lynch earlier today, despite rhetorical opposition from far right Presidential candidate Ted Cruz and Senate Majority Turtle Mitch McConnell. Loretta Lynch is the daughter of Civil Rights activists, and will be the first black woman to hold the position of Attorney General.
