-- Official Press Release --
Digital Artist/ Musician Joel Hornsby ("J"), founder of Resonant Sound Gear, has designed and produced a new 3D printed and laser cut headphone set, stylized like a Graffiti Piece. It's an innovative take on technology, art and sound engineering.
Resonant Sound Gear Blueprint Wallpaper #1
"I wanted to create something more visually and functionally innovative. It was my way of making something combining my interest in Graffiti, Music and Digital Art." Says J.
J's pursuit of quality and aesthetics led him to connect with an Industrial Designer and Nathan Tan/Nate1 (http://shopnewskool.com/cms.php?id_cms=4) of New Skool and 1AMsf. "After my initial design I wanted an industrial designer's input. He liked the concept and worked on improvements to take it to the best possible production level. I then contacted Nate through a mutual friend and he really like what I was doing too. Hearing that from a Graffiti Artist and teacher was a huge boost. He's currently designing the next set."

The headphones are made to be not only stylish but also functional. "I'm the type of person who wants to understand how things work and make them better. All the popular headphones out seem to avoid taking any real chances, visually or functionally. I wanted the user to have a few positional options AND accent the look. The detachable chambers was a big one. I've seen DJ's, for example, do all kinds of things with Headphones that made me wonder why some of them weren't designed to do what the user wants or needs do with them."
"I've been talking directly to speaker manufacturers, going through samples", J says, "and its been very cool getting to A/B speakers and really testing them out. You quickly have to learn not to "listen with your eyes." The speakers we started with and the ones I expected to work are not the ones that sounded the best and gave the best frequency response...they sometimes even defied the charts when they were tested through numerous kinds of genres and various listeners. Consistently we found certain speakers outperformed others. In the end, we're going with the ones the SOUND the best, not that READ the best. For me it's important that the Headphones LOOK and SOUND good. It's can't just be one or the other."

As many product and technology projects have proven successful, Kickstarter was the natural platform to launch a community driven and innovative product like 3D printed headphones. As J explains, "Kickstarter allows me to get the product right into the hands of people who will love it. It made the most sense for something like this-a really unique niche product with a lot of potential."
As the Kickstarter planning proceeded J and Nate had another brainstorm. "Nate had this really cool headphone design he did for shirts and after we started talking about him doing the next piece I mentioned that I need to set up some rewards and it was one of those things where I didn't even have to finish the sentence!"
Nate1 says "I am really excited to collab with Joel and Resonant Sound. Being able to help out on design of art for the actual headphones AND creating some limited apparel is an awesome partnership for me. The headphone tee we are collaborating on is similar to my New Skool headphone design and mixing the design of RS's first pair of headphones together into one sick t-shirt."

Resonant Sound Gear x New Skool Hoodie (Reward #3)
"One of the best and most exciting parts of this particular Project is that we are focused on doing as much as possible locally, in the San Francisco Bay Area." J says "From the beginning I've thought of this as a "production" not just a project. My thinking was always 'how do I make this procedural being that I look at this as ART and reproduction, NOT manufacturing. I've sourced and been in contact with every supplier and most of them are waiting on my call. The thought process was "how do I do these and NOT have to send it overseas." To that end, the commercial grade Silicone, the laser cutting, sheets of memory foam, the die cutting, the molds (one of the most costly parts), metals, wiring and components and labor have all been priced and processes for all of them have been determined. Construction methodologies for consistency has also been planned out. "I have to look at this like a small business trying to do something great, not a large company trying to maximize profit. The cost of each model is going to be higher, but that has been considered toward the price and it still works in a competitive way. Even with a small team, assembly for the first units and ramp up should work out well."
"My goal is to do more Models in the future with unique Graffiti Artists. There's a lot of excitement around this project and everyone I show it to loves it!" says J "It's a great start to this project, I can't wait to get these out to people!"
This is about the combination of design, creativity and vision that makes a unique product. Resonant Sound Gear is on the cutting edge of what Technology and Artistry can produce. If you believe in that and like what you see, please go back to the top of the page and pledge now!
Thank you for your support!!!
As a new product going into production, it's unrealistic to not expect challenges. The year spent designing and ramping up for the Kickstarter was also used to minimize challenges and focus on non-problematic methodologies, consistent sourcing and suppliers. That being said, I'm sure something will come up, but I doubt it will be something that can't be handled efficiently. Every consideration has gone toward this and after experiencing good and bad project execution myself, I will make SURE that I keep everyone abreast of what's happening if things DO come up.
T-shirts and Hoodies are a known commodity. New Skool makes shirts and Nate1 took the files and made his design from that. We just need to hit "go".
As far as the larger Prize, the headphones, I am chomping at the bit to get them going.
Sourcing: The primary challenge we face will be from our suppliers as the system, set up, and process for doing this has been set up and gone through a year of testing, going through problems early and getting people in place to be ready for orders. So far, the supplies have been very consistent delivering products but things can always happen.
Most relationships have been set up with all the necessary parties and they are waiting to fulfill orders but we can't place orders for the first 50 and the other Pre-Sale models until we can make a sizable order.
Unconventional design: Almost a year has been put into the development of this project. A variety of methods and design have been researched and executed and each one produced a understanding of what worked and what didn't. The limits and potential problems with the overall design have been addressed though I think it is fair and reasonable to expect some "feature creep." I don't expect features to be eliminated, though some may be added.
IN-sourcing: One of my goals with the Product is NOT to send work overseas and to complete the Product and Project in the SF Bay Area - truly Made in America - from design to assembly. This will require a bit of ramp up to find a team, but the project is designed to work in phases (hence the initially limit of 50 units and the time-lines) and I do have a core team of friends that is willing to stay up late and lose sleep to get things done!
Quality Control: All test will be in house and we will be going OUT OF OUR WAY to maintain interaction and satisfaction with our customers. Our goal is to make this something that each and every person values as a piece of functional art, NOT just another pair of headphones...

Altar Ego Project: The act of transformation can be powerful. In our daily lives we may find it difficult to transform ourselves into the “me” we hope to be. Perhaps we wish we were more confident, less materialistic, beautiful, powerful or grounded and at peace with ourselves. We can achieve all of these things if we desire and if we are ready to put the time and energy into the process of transformation. Sometimes we need a jump-start, a glimpse of who we really are and what we can be. The “Paint is Power” project helps individuals see past their body images or personal limitations and for an hour or more they see themselves as something different, perhaps greater. The painted become empowered and someone or something else emerges which can help people in a myriad of ways. For the project or workshop I usually ask participants Before Questions so I can collaborate with the client to help them realize their new persona. While children especially love to be painted, when adults become a work of art they give themselves and those around them an opportunity to laugh and open up. “Paint is Power” can be used for team building, personal healing, growth, and most importantly it transforms the client into a walking work of art (of course each person is a work of art with or without paint).
