candy magazine- the first tansgender fashion magazine- has drag michelle obama on cover

December 19, 2012

Candy Magazine, The first transgender fashion magazine of it’s kind, paid homage to First Lady Michelle Obama in this month’s issue. Notably in drag culture, cultural icons and respectable public figures are saluted as a noteworthy subjects to be represented in drag, such as Marilyn Monroe, Whitney Huston, Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, and Cher. Their dress represents something to “aspire to” and for cultural figures it is a sign of respect and is complimentary, rather than satire or disrespectful. Candy’s cover has caused quite a stir! Members outside of the LGBT community have taken Candy’s portrayal of the First Lady as disrespectful to the First Family, which was not the intention but understandable to those not familiar with drag culture. Candy salutes Mrs. Obama, what is your take on “Obama Drag”?
