I'm a sucker for a killer bassline. And the new single from Yinka (from the forthcoming full-length A Hundred Hurricanes Coming Through) delivers that and a hell of a lot more. A catchy dance-punk track, “No Brakes” is the missing link between Prince, the Talking Heads, and Q and Not U. (It's also reminding me that I really need to get my brakes fixed. But that's not really relevant, is it?)
“You got your religion / the country that you're from / your neighborhood / you ask to which of these do I belong? / I'm just me...” is a sentiment I think most of us in this hyper-mobile always-connected world can relate to. The song is a simultaneous celebration and criticism of always-on culture. And it doesn't hurt that it's got a killer bassline. Let us know what you think. Are you psyched for the full record?
