corporate model call to cater to ethnic hair, good or bad?

January 19, 2011

The fact that big corporate companies are finally peaking interest in making products for ethnic hair is great, right?  For a long time, many people with thick coarse hair have complained that their were no products on the shelves that catered to their hair textures.  Overtime, smaller name companies like Karen’s Body Beautiful, Koils by Nature, Carrol’s Daughter, and Bee Mine popped up specifically catering to women of color with unprocessed hair and boasted on their use of safe all natural products.  It didn’t take long for bigger companies to catch on to the trend and started investing their dollars in these new products.  Most recently, product mogul, Aveda, announced a model call for women of African decent to trail a new line of their shampoos, conditioners, and moisturizers. But is it good for corporate companies to take interest in coarse hair as they begin to notice the potential monetary gains to take the business away from smaller start up companies?  Or is the competition better for the consumers pocket?  Let us know.

If you want to participate in the Aveda model call and are in NY this Friday, January 21, the call is from 5-7 and Saturday, January 22 from 10-12 at the Aveda Advanced Academy (20 Vandam Street New York, NY 10013).
