Ok now, this 'Dear White People' satire video is causing a commotion on the web. Writer/director/producer Justin Simien says: "Meant to articulate the sometimes funny, mostly harmless, but occasionally painful experience of being a Black face in a vastly white place (i.e. most Hollywood work environments) @DearWhitePeople also served an ulterior motive of mine. I'd been working for some time on a satire about race identity. The feature script for Dear White People follows the events leading up to a race riot a prestigious predominately white university through the perspectives of four very different Black students. (...)
My film really isn't about "white racism" or racism at all. As I see, it racism is systemic and is inherently reflected in any honest story about life as a minority in this country. (...) It's about the difference between how the mass culture responds to a person because of their race and who they understand themselves to truly be."
Sounds alright by us, but as you can imagine, not everyone thinks this is funny... outraged reactions have poured in since the video surfaced a few days ago (and of course racist comments started flying). So tell us: what's the deal here?

Comment by No Mo on June 16, 2012 at 9:34am Dear white people, and colored people who yield to(and hail) white culture,
I stopped defining success by your standards. Nor do I use your scales to measure. Nor respect your assessments of artistic expressions that were either stolen or highly influenced by colored peeps. I didnt appreciate this trailer needs some cowriting(Mooney maybe?) but the concept is great and the actors are gorgeous.Good luck I got five on it plus I'll promote. Got a 5star black film for yall that will never see the box office: "Dysfunctional Friends" must see.
Comment by geri on June 16, 2012 at 1:28am the comments on youtube are a breeding ground for trolls & closet racists. no need to look at them! but i do appreciate the ones who defend for just the principle of it all...

Comment by Brown Kitsune on June 15, 2012 at 7:04pm This movie reflects most things that I have been through. Having friends who are all white they really don't understand why I react to certain things and truthfully they never will. People tend to not like things that in some way reflects how they truly act ( we as black people are the same). The comments on youtube are quit interesting, people. They say black people are the racist group..... and then they end that sentence with nigger or they are too stupid to know it.... This world, this world.
Comment by Milo Mojo on June 15, 2012 at 6:20pm Wow. I am really looking forward to seeing this. Bring it! Yes... there will be those who don't get it but a connection will be made with every black person who sees that. I commend the forces behind this project for having the heart to step up to the plate. Thank you.
