Dorm Room Diaries: I'd hook up with an Afro-punk

The Afro-punk hook up posts received some of the highest member feed-back of any submission we've posted on the site. That got us thinking...1) we should do something on Afro-punk to get people hooking up (we're working on it) and 2) we wanted to hear more personal stories from our members to see what their dating history has been. Luckily for us, our residential womanist blogger, Twyla, decided to focus her new video post on her "hook-up" history. In this post, Twyla gets personal and chats about her past interracial relationships, her dating experience at an all black college, and what it's been like trying to date within her race. She even gives us an update on her quest for love at the 2010 Afro-punk festival.

Watch below.

I love this post. Rock on Girl. I'm a high school senior, who loves rock music. I have been through the trials and tribulations of being an afro-punk. I'm the only one in my family that is in love with this kid of music and where I come from black girls only listen to r&b and rap. I appreciated your post. I'm applying to three HBCU and I'm hella excited!!!!!!!!!!!

Im in high school still and everything you said is happening now, except for me the white washing or choosing to be like your people is kind of implied. Yet, im accepted by many. Similar but not the same but you got my standing ovation

Yeah, I pretty much felt the same in Secondary school. I still get weird looks and comments from my friends and family when I don't know about the latest gangsta rapper on the block. Gucci Mane and the likes. I wish I could have attended an AP event but that will hopefully change in the near future when I have ability to travel around.

Very well said, Twyla! That's the first time I've ever heard someone just come out and say what a lot of us are embarrassed to admit. I went through the same sort of experiences. About at one point preferring a white man over a black man and being called out for it. And just like you I’ve grown to accept who I am and even chopped off the perm as well. I love you videos because you're so real and honest. Geez Louise, you just recapped my life from middle school to college! Lol! Except instead of converting to paganism I just cut out religion all together. Heh, a black atheist, that’s a whole other journey for me. Take care!
