Dorm Room Diaries: Schooling Fem Haters

So, what exactly is a feminist and why is there such a stigma that surrounds the word? In this edition of Dorm Room Diaries of a Fem Nerd, Twyla calls out "feminism haters" and pulls out her dictionary to give the official definition of a word, that she feels, is tossed around too loosely.

Actually Alice Walker coined the term "Womanism" in her book *In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens* to mean a feminist of color. She says something along the lines of "womanism is to feminism as purple is to lavender." I'm not sure if that's the exact quote tho.
In fact, I define myself as a womanist more so than a feminist. I mention that in the very first DD blog post. Check it out!

I think we have to separate white feminism and black feminism. A lot of the framework that people refer to is not coming from the reference point of the experience of Africanate women and is otherwise going to be in heavy need of interpretation.
Most people don't know black feminism -- including black feminists. Its such a new idea.

Hey DRD, I actually really like the movie, I just think that scene is a pretty cheap shot. I think it's especially sick that their response to a point about violence is to respond with violence and for no good reason. Why...because they disagree with her? Not cool. But...watch it and decide for yourself.

Shawn, how did you get from door opening to Bookdock Saints? The character in Boondock Saints was talking about systematic patriarchal oppression and NOT something as seemingly benign as opening the door - she was talking about how men could legally beat their wives. Well, guess what...men still beat their wives with a lot of things that exceed the rule of thumb and get away with it and it's 2010, so yeah...some people don't find it funny.

wtf?

Shawn definitely hit this one on the head for me

@DrD Exactly. I can't stand when people assume that feminists bite a man's head off for opening a door for them. Damn stereotypes. I had to correct someone about the same exact thing yesterday.

Well Morgan, that's awesome that you haven't experienced sexism... I've experienced both and they are equally frustrating in my opinion.

I commend and aspire to be like you Nit!! I plan on having my own practice someday and give women in labor more options in birth... like a midwife with an MD basically. Wish me luck.

And Shawn, I am equally pissed off by my feminist sisters who try to take things too far. I never get upset when a male opens the door for me... I just return the favor with enthusiastic egalitarian fervor.

I do however wish to point out the fact that feminists like the woman you just described are in the minority. Most women's rights activists are not that radical (or ungrateful!). We just want people to recognize that we are just as important as the guys: we deserve equal pay for the same work, the right to be taken seriously as people and not just sex objects, the right to run in the streets drunk at night with our friends safely... you know. Just stuff that a lot of men take for granted already.

It's all about equality and fairness. Not who's better than who.

I think its more on what your rallying against more then anything. If an individual woman can do a job better then an individual man, then please by all means, do the job and get the equal pay that comes with it. You did the job and you have EARNED that money. However, if a man, not even really thinking about it opens up a door for the woman behind him simply because thats how he is, and the woman begins to yell at him, calling him a sexist pig (true story), then I think you just overstepped what its really about. Anyone remember the movie Boondock Saints where that fem went off on the brothers?

As always big grin, equal pay for equal work, why men want to control everything or have more money to control everything is so beyond me...Any who, that's why I have my own businesses and I run the show cause it's nice to be boss lady as well...so there Darling as always keep kicking booty and taking names...so proud
