exclusive basquiat artwork will be exhibited for the first time at x contemporary in miami
Jean Michel Basquiat has become somewhat of an icon for Black artistic genius. Although he passed away in 1988, since the time of his death, he’s been hailed as one of the greatest neo-expressionist painters in to ever live and references to his work in hip hop and punk culture abound. X Contemporary, an affiliate to the Miami Art Basel festival, will be exhibiting some exclusive early works of Basquiat at the Nobu Hotel this winter. The pieces include paintings, collages, and drawings, made between 1979 and 1981 in the Manhattan apartment of his friend Lonny Lichtenberg, and will be curated for the fair by the artist’s onetime collaborator, Al Diaz, his partner in the infamous graffiti duo, SAMO. Before this exhibition, they were only seen by a handful of people. Hopefully this exhibition will open the doors for more people to witness this particular collection by the late prodigy.
