fashion: “designer plays eric garner police video at new york fashion week show”

A reported by The Guardian, the BlackLivesMatter movement made an unapologetic appearance last week at New York Fashion Week – courtesy of designer Kerby Jean-Raymond. The presentation of his Pyer Moss collection included the screening of videos of police violence (including that of Eric Garner, in which the New Yorker was choked to death) and clothing/shoes were tagged by artist Gregory Siff with statements such as “Breathe Breathe Breathe” (a reference to Garner’s unanswered call for help). Even more powerful is the fact that family members of victims of police brutality were in attendance, seated on the coveted front row. Kerby Jean-Raymond states, “I’m black, I’m a designer, I’m living in a time when this is happening […]You’re 28 years old, you’re watching kids younger than you who are being killed by grown men who claim fear as an excuse.” Explore below.
