feature: “am i: too african to be american or too american to be african?” – the new documentary from filmmaker nadia sasso

November 5, 2015

Take a look at the trailers for filmmaker Nadia Sasso‘s new documentary, “Am I: Too African to be American or Too American to be African?” – a film (the first in a series) that explores identity development and the tensions experienced between West African and American cultural experiences via candid interviews with first-generation West African-Americans. One of those interviewees is ‘Awkward Black Girl’ creator Issa Rae, who is of Senegalese heritage. Talking to Colorlines, Nadia Sasso states: “some people have asked me, “Why are you airing our dirty laundry?” But nothing ever happens without a conversation, and you generate a conversation by putting things in people’s faces […] We all want to tell our experiences and lives, but we [can’t grow if we] don’t want to listen to each other.” Watch the trailers below and CLICK HERE to stream the film in full (plus info on upcoming screenings).
