feature: atlanta-based illustrator marcus williams’ league of ‘young heroes’

December 15, 2015

Take a look at comic book illustrator Marcus Williams’ ‘Young Heroes’ poster series. The Atlanta-based artist (known for his superheroine ‘Super Natural‘) writes: “The “Young Heroes” line exist due to multiple conversations I’ve had with black parents that come to comic conventions with their young children and complain of not having enough black or ethnic characters to introduce to their kids. Growing up reading comics, it didn’t occur to me that these characters were not highlighted as much as other characters because I wasn’t looking for them at the time. After studying the comic industry as an adult, I understand the reasons of why this occurs and I want to make a conscious effort to create art that reflects those young individuals. In most cases, they may or may not know of all the great ethnic characters that are in comics, so I’m re-imagining those characters as “young heroes” to better connect with those young readers.” Explore below.
