feature: ‘baddddd sonia sanchez’ – the new documentary about pioneering poet sonia sanchez

November 12, 2015

Take a look at the trailer for ‘BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez’ – a performance-packed documentary about Sonia Sanchez, the legendary African-American poet (featuring interviews and appearances by Questlove, Talib Kweli, Nikki Giovanni, Amiri Baraka, Ruby Dee, Yasiin Bey and more). The film’s creators – Barbara Attie, Janet Goldwater and Sabrina Schmidt Gordon – state: “Sonia Sanchez is a lion in literature’s forest. When she writes, she roars.” So said Maya Angelou about her friend and fellow poet. The prodigious Sanchez has been on the front lines of art and activism for 60 years–teaching, writing, performing, protesting. She was a pioneer of the Black Arts Movement, fought to establish the first university Black Studies program in the country, and has exerted a widely acknowledged influence on the Hip-Hop and spoken word movements. But, her commitment to justice for all people has come at a cost, and this intimate portrait captures the breadth of Sanchez’s rich and often unsettled life.” You can catch the NY premiere of ‘BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez’ on Wed, Nov. 18, 12:30 PM, and Thurs, Nov 19, 7:15pm, at the IFC Center theatre (323 6th Ave @West 3rd St. New York, NY). The screenings are part of the DOC NYC film festival, and Sonia Sanchez will make a Q&A appearance at the Thursday screening! CLICK HERE for tickets and watch the trailer below.
