feature: #blackoncampus hash tag sheds light on life as a marginalized student

November 16, 2015

As BBC News writes, “The racially polarised debate stemming from events at the University of Missouri seems to be spreading online to campuses across the US” – particularly through a new hashtag created by Concerned Student 1950, the activist group behind the Missouri protests. “Black Students and black alum, tell us your experiences as a marginalized student. Hashtag #BlackOnCampus,” tweeted the group. According to reports, that tweet has now resulted in more than 90,000 posted messages (nationwide) using the hashtag. One of those messages: “Being #BlackOnCampus means you’re beloved in brochures & ‘diversity’ campaigns, but isolated & disregarded in campus access & equity” (tweeted Philadelphia based-journalist Ernest Owens).
