feature: brazilian photographer evelyn luna captures the boundless freedom of the new generation in beautiful new series ‘afro carioca’

August 25, 2016

This latest series from Brazil-based photographer Evelyn Luna provides a thrilling glimpse into the revolution that is the youth- the new millennials. In this explosive era of self-actualization and gender fluidity, the younger generations are reclaiming their power and making themselves known, and Luna’s series- ‘Afro Carioca’- is a beautifully crafted portal into the lives and thriving identities of the subjects.

Shot in a varying climate of graffiti, vibrancy, and poise, the models are highlighted, and their joy is effervescent. Focusing greatly on the relationships between the subjects, the love is tangible- and as they beautifully weave between and around each other, viewers are granted a personal glimpse of the sacred bond they share, and how it manifests through art. This afro-driven project is -in my opinion- a gift to the medium, and a necessary source of representation for, not only people of color, but for the gender fluid creatives of our generation. Check out some of my favorite shots from ‘Afro Carioca’, and learn more about Evelyn Luna below.
