feature: ‘charges dropped for cop who fatally shot sleeping 7-year-old girl’

December 3, 2014

One comment that I’ve heard frequently with regards to Mike Brown and the subsequent events in Ferguson, is that this is not the first time and it won’t be the last time. In the last decade, there have been countless shootings of unarmed black civilians by police officers, and one that sadly stands out is that of 7 year old Aiyana Stanley Jones in 2010 – shot as she slept during a SWAT team police raid (a raid that was not only allegedly for a neighboring house instead, but also being filmed for a true-crime reality show). It’s now been reported that the officer Joseph Weekley who shot Aiyana has had all manslaughter charges against him dropped. Now when you couple this news with last week’s grand jury decision to let Darren Wilson walk away a free man, you truly begin to understand people’s sentiments when they assert loudly that “Black Lives Matter!” Read more on this story HERE.
