April 26, 2016

‘Conversation on Creativity’ is a regular event hosted by Creative Nestlings a company based in Cape Town, South Africa. The purpose is to bring together creatives and get them to dialogue. The conversations feature creative individuals from all around the world to share their creative journeys and experiences. The audience gets to engage with these individuals through question and answer sessions.

This past Saturday the 13th edition of conversations on creativity was hosted for the first time at The Nest Space which is owned by Creative Nestlings. The panel was comprised of filmmaker/photographer Imraan Christian, Publisher Ian McNair & Professional Choreographer & Dancer Lee Sophia Piedt. Lovely conversations were enjoyed, here are some thoughts from attendees about the session and what they thought about :

By Andiswa Mkosi*, AFROPUNK Contributor

“I think they are making it easy for us to understand the Cape Town creative landscape. I am from Mafikeng originally came to Cape Town in 2013,this is not my first conversations on creativity. They are sharing information that we young people need to hear and access. I am studying photography at City Varsity. Its a great place connect with like minded individuals.” – Mpho Mpiteri

This is a great initiative because we get to hear some insightful information, regarding the different respective fields of creativity.I did not even know about the online publication Platform and y coming here I have found out about it.Here different subcultures are getting together and engaging in talks and finding ways to connect. Its a beautiful thing and it can only grow the creative industry and most importantly unify it” – Kude “This is my first conversations on creativity.I have clearly been sleeping on this. Its a veryimportant exercise for us all to do to get involved and get together and talk about the issues that we face.Big ups to Dillion Phiri and his team.” – TheRobinLee “I came here to get inspiration,I definitely think the conversation is helping because we definitely need to start conversing more often as creatives and as a people in conversation. It also a great space to get connections and collaborate with other creatives.” – @Phoebe.Apondi “Spaces like this are really important,I still think there is room for improvement and diversification, even though there is some diversity here right now I don’t think its enough. More word should be shared about these cool gatherings, there are so many creative people in this city that would have enjoyed this talk thoroughly.Otherwise I really think spaces like this are important.” – @Zaza_Like_No_Other “Its very interesting,I learnt a lot it was quite interesting especially because it was my first time attending something of this nature.” – Ms.Hamy “A lot of things that Imraan Christian touched on resonated with me ,especially because I want to go into film making because I have been hesitant in taking action. Its very tough looking at our present reality where some of us not confident enough,we seem to hold back when we are around each other and speak our mind and hearts desires this plays against opportunities of collaboration. How do we break those barriers and see each others full potential.” – SanelisiweNyaba

“Very grateful, got to learn lot. There are a lot of things I did not know that I am now aware of.I look forward to meeting more people and learning more because one will never learn enough.” – Anele Matomela “I really enjoyed it I needed this today. This was an important panel of speakers, especially to be ina space like this where you feel safe. These are talks and chats that needs to had, because the problem is that artists are not communicating with one another. So to bring people together in space like this is vital. I was hearing things that I have been thinking about and could not articulate.” – @findingneema “This was amazing the space was really inclusive. In comparison to spaces like UCT. Through gatherings like these, this is the way we are going to move forward through inclusivity and collaboration. Everyone in this room is talking to one another where is in typical situations it would not happen.” – Aneem Christian “He talk was really dope, its very interesting how we are trying to define a black identity artistically. These new notions of self and creating and not in response to understanding what it means to be black in this art world and how we can express ourselves as black people and define characters or just teach people. We are the first young people to define a new way expression mong black people.” – Seth Banda “The energy in this place was very beautiful. Its really important to create spaces like these forcreatives because a lot of the time creativity is shunned down by society, the government andother formal structures.” – Lauren
