Explore the art of Nigerian-born illustrator Jibola Fagbamiye. Based in Toronto, Jibola’s work (in his own words) “fuses digital design, traditional painting and comic illustration with funky chaotic textures to create a stimulating, in your face, visual language” – influenced by artists such as Ernie Barnes, Andy Warhol and comic book artists Joe Maduera and Frank Miller. Among the pieces featured below is Jibola’s poignant tribute to Sandra Bland, of which he tells us: “Growing up in Nigeria in the 80s and early 90s when being political meant direct challenge with the military regime – which was pretty much a death wish. That reality made me very aware of my world and how I fit in it.The Sandra Bland story and the many stories of police killings in the US hit a dark unpleasant reminiscent cord. People who clashed with authority either disappeared mysteriously or died in questionable ways. I felt compelled to illustrate something for Sandra Bland to show love to solidarity, and to send love to my brothers and sisters fighting for the world to see the truth.
