feature: ghanaian illustrator ahmed kwabena partey merges tradition and phenomenon with bold, revolutionary series of african superheroes

August 17, 2016

We’re all familiar with Superman, Batman, and Wonder woman- but have you heard of Addo, Nahki, or Agai?

Us either, until now: Ghanaian visual artist Ahmed Kwabena Partey is powerfully shifting the definition of a ‘superhero’ with his unique and revolutionary characters- adding a new genre for proper representation of the African spirit. By channeling the true essence of African culture and tradition, into a medium of entertainment and phenomenon. The almost cult-like following of superheroes past have been- quite frankly- really Euro-centric, yet with Partey’s induction into the superhero scene, the tide is changing, and new heroes are being born.

Pulling influence from the traditional believes of the culture , and the authentic, spiritual aspect of “super powers”, these heroes are ones of depth and history- true role models and a much needed representation of true African strength and influence. Check out your new favorite heroes below.
