WTF?! According to Anthony Horowitz, the author of the next James Bond novels, British actor Idris Elba is “too street” to play the title character. Until recently, the versatile actor (known for his role in The Wire, Luther, and for portraying Nelson Mandela) had been seen as first in the running to replace Daniel Craig in the James Bond film franchise. However Horowitz’ latest comments have “panned the prospect that Elba could be the first black actor to be cast as 007”, as the Washington Post states. The newspaper reports, “Talk of Elba as Bond isn’t just idle speculation: His name was floated by ex-Sony boss Amy Pascal in private e-mails that were revealed by hackers before her ouster.” Horowitz, who was chosen by the Ian Fleming estate to continue the James Bond novels, is quoted as saying: “For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It’s not a colour issue. I think he is probably a bit too ‘street’ for Bond. Is it a question of being suave? Yeah.” Why not just say “too black”.
