feature: jean grae premieres inspired new track ‘what you came for’ from marvel’s ‘black panther’ revival

July 28, 2016

With the approaching revival of Marvel’s Black Panther: A Nation under our Feet, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates– in which the protagonist finds himself in a standoff with a ‘superhuman terrorist group’ called The People, and must subsequently fight for the safety of his African nation- cultural pride is in full throttle. Rapper Jean Grae is adding to the excitement with the premiere of her new single ‘What You Came For‘. A chilling and suspenseful track with potent hints of African-style chanting; the jungle beat lying under Grae’s raps, works to transport the listener to the reality of the piece’s inspiration. Written specifically for Black Panther, ‘What You Came For’ is an homage to the resistance of tyranny as the reclamation of culture. Grae’s track gives great foreshadowing to the power of Marvel’s upcoming project, and places African influence on a pedestal.
