feature: jocelyn ellis creates conceptual masterpiece with ‘life of a hologram’

In 2012, Jocelyn Ellis (lead singer of Jocelyn Ellis & The Alpha Theory) set up an IndieGoGo campaign to raise funds for her album Life of a Hologram, which is a conceptual project based on a hologram’s life in 4013. Having raised most of her $5,000 target, debut solo album Life Of A Hologram was released in the winter of 2013.

Combining EDM with hip hop and folk elements (her sound has been coined as “Neon Folk”), Life Of A Hologram is a storyboard, painting a bleak picture of the future 2000 years down the road. Not that we can be surprised. Our current natural resources are fast depleting. The future’s looking seriously grim to me too. There is an array of sounds on Life Of A Hologram. A heavy guitar presence (pretty normal right?) but the incorporation of farm animals and dolphins does step outside the box a little. Jocelyn Ellis’ sound lies somewhere between Kate Bush, Bjork and Kilo Kish.

Life Of A Hologram tells the tale of an androids-occupied earth, run by “The Overseer” rationing everything in sight, including free thought and free will. It’s all very otherworldly and full of whimsy, and at the same time you cannot help but feel a little lump in your throat when listening to such songs as “Broken Stars” which literally cries and wails in despair. NC songstress Jocelyn Ellis executes her mission with precision. It is virtually impossible to permeate the many meaningful messages throughout this album. Genius project. Go buy the album now!
