July 11, 2014

In the midst of such a chaotic world full of mischief, injustice and poverty is an optimist who seeks to soothe the world’s friction with captivating brilliant imagery. A motley photo of a protector that arises through scum, gains enough strength to overlook a village that seems to be decaying through dark fog. It is, The Prophecy, a prediction we, the onlookers have no knowledge of yet and may never learn of. This is the vision of Belgian-Beninese photographer Fabrice Monteiro who grants us privilege to delve into his genius and peek at a hopeful world unseen through carnal thinking.

As I observe one of Monteiro’s most painful images, Black man who’s contained by a metal collar around his neck, I think to myself that his ability to provoke intense emotion is the purpose of art. His subtlety causes viewers to connect subconsciously which is a great artist trait.

Even if he captures a portrait of a woman who sits contently on a balcony overlooking a beautiful sunset, or a still photo of what was a communal experience full of energy, we can’t help but place ourselves at the scene. As we enter his lens, an equal amount of energy and beauty experienced in the past, visits our imagination as we share in its delight.

As Fabrice Monteiro continues to broaden his horizons and travel the world, his knowledge and creativity expounds greatly. We will be sure to keep up with his magnetic pull that extracts all of the world’s beauty, whether it’s tucked in a abandoned building, or lurking on the grounds of a cemetery.
