He tells us, “My work promotes black pride and pays homage to many techniques our ancestors have used previously”. His team state: “With his body of work titled “Melanin”, Jaleel challenges the Eurocentric standards of beauty by depicting African Americans in a way where no matter how brown or dark their skin may be, their voice and presence are still valued and appreciated in today’s day and age”.
