feature: the ‘finding dante’ exhibit – an artivism photo project about police brutality

Earlier this year, we wrote of the ‘Finding Dante’ artivism project – the brainchild of New York based journalist Rico Washington and sociopolitical artist Shino Yanagawa (a collaborative art team known for their works that debunk stigmas and stereotypes). For the photo project, a response to police brutality and subsequent social unrest, the duo interviewed and photographed New York based Black and Latino teenage boys with afros. You can now see phase 2 of the project at New York University’s Kimmel Galleries, exhibited until December 12 2015 (the first phase took place earlier this year in Harlem).  CLICK HERE for more info. “Relieved of his private security detail and notoriety, how would New York City mayor Bill de Blasio’s biracial teen son Dante fare in a group of his afro coiffed peers approached by the NYPD?” That is the question posed by Washington and Yanagawa’s latest work.
