feature: the ‘realeza negra (black royalty)’ project, by brazilian photographer luiz h. ferreira

November 20, 2015

Take a look at the ‘Realeza Negra (Black Royalty)’ project, the latest photo series from Brazilian photographer Luiz H. Ferreira – a photographer (based in Brasília, the capital of Brazil) who is bringing visibility to black culture in Brazil with his striking work. Ferreira tells us: “The ‘Realeza Negra (Black Royalty)’ project, through these photographs of black youths, explores the bond of our African roots; celebrating urban royalty, ancestral memory, beauty, heritage, strength and endurance.”Todo negro é um rei, toda negra é rainha aqui” (Every black is a king, all black queen is here)”. FYI today is a special day in Brazil for the Afro-Brazilian community and this new photo series is in honor of that. Ferreira says, “The 20th of November is a symbol for all the black movement in Brazil. The date marks the death of Zumbi dos Palmares, who died in 1695, an icon of resistance to slavery and the flagship brand of freedom their struggle remains an enduring symbol of freedom and justice.” Explore below.
