fighting #oscarssowhite one movie at a time, comedy central star jessica williams announces debut lead role in upcoming feature film

Jessica Williams made history in 2012 when she became the first Black female correspondent on The Daily Show and now she’s making the transition from comedy into full fledged acting. Independent production company Beachside announced that the actress-comedian will star in writer / director Jim Strouse’ new film in a role specifically developed for her. This isn’t the first time these two have collaborated on a film. Just last year Williams and Strouse worked together on “People Places Things,” a film that received critical acclaim at Sundance, and likely inspired the two to continue their partnership. There’s no name for the movie yet but the synopsis, indicates that Williams will be playing a newly single playwright trying to make it through tough times with the help of a recent divorcee played by Chris O’Dowd, and her ex boyfriend will be played by ATLANTA standout Lakeith Stanfield. As far as we’re concerned, this is an exciting move and more representation from people of color on the big screen is a step in the right direction.
