free download: saul williams drops dope new single and essay in honor of mlk day #soundcheck

January 19, 2015

Always outspoken, always uncompromising, the great Saul Williams dropped a new single today in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The track “All Coltrane Solos At Once” features a collaboration with Haleek Maul. With a chorus of “fuck you, understand me” Saul’s hyper-literate verses tie today’s civil rights struggle to the past. The track is accompanied by Williams’ essay on the state of the civil rights struggle, which he dubs “an annotated middle finger.”

Today will be filled with essays, blog posts, and media analysis breaking down how MLK’s work and words are or aren’t relevant to what’s going on today, or what he would or wouldn’t have thought about today’s civil rights movement. While it’s irresistible to speculate, it has little bearing on where we are now as a society and how to move forward. Saul Williams’ “All Coltrane Solos At Once” is essential to what’s happening here and now.
